Being part of Hawaii and doing business on this small island in the middle of the Pacific adds a particular awareness about our fragile
environment. Because we love the ocean and clean, unpolluted streams and mountainsides, we encourage our customers to purchase
biodegradable and reusable products whenever possible. We would like to encourage you to get involved. Spend a few hours a month
to help clean a beach or stream. Each one of us can contribute in small ways. Pick up three pieces of litter the next time you go to the
beach. It does not take much effort, but does make an immediate impact. Together we can tackle the litter problem.
As a lover of all things to do with ocean recreation I would like to dedicate this page to organizations that are working on behalf of the
environment and contributing to find solutions to clean up ocean pollution.
Our sincere appreciation to Boyan Slat, Founder of The Ocean Cleanup www.theoceancleanup.com for his tireless work on
developing technology to extract plastic pollution from our oceans.
We would like to acknowledge the Surfrider Foundation www.surfrider.org , a grassroots organization working to preserve and clean the
worlds beaches. 4ocean https://4ocean.com, a global cleanup operation that’s stopping plastic pollution at it’s source.
A special congratulations on finishing the 2019 Trans-Pac Ocean Yacht Race goes out to my friend Russ Johnson and his crew on Blue
Moon. https://svbluemoon.com. During their return voyage back to San Francisco they are deploying a FloatECO monitoring system
inside the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
S.V. Blue Moon partnered with the University of Hawaii, the University of Washington and NASA, who created this platform to monitor this
floating ecosystem and gain a better understanding of the impact the plastic debris has on surrounding marine life. Please
log-on to their website to get more information on these tireless voyagers contributing to find solutions to rid the oceans of plastic debris.
Last but not least a BIG MAHALO to Mr. Tapani Vuori, General Manager of the Maui Ocean Center. During a recent visit to Maui Tapani
shared his immense knowledge and love for Hawaii and our surrounding waters and reefs. The reason I am sitting here today writing this
article, is because of your infectious inspiration and love for our Aina. Mahalo Nui Loa ! You are a true champion of the environment.
A big Thank You to the thousands and thousands of volunteers and members of these organizations that give tirelessly of their time to rid
the world of plastic and contribute to a greener tomorrow.
Mahalo Nui Loa.
